Coach McClain began his collegiate career at Xavier University, however, after having three surgeries, his career looked like it was coming to an end. That was until Indiana Tech gave him a chance. He holds multiple records at Tech including: career hits (343), single season hits (102), single season average (.457), career at bats (830), and career triples (14).

He also holds second in multiple records including: career batting average (.413), career runs scored (198), games played (231), doubles (62), total bases (553), home runs (40), RBIs (215), and HBP (48).

Coach McClain was also a three time NAIA All-American, three time CoSIDA Academic All-American and was the WHAC player of the year twice. McClain also won the Rawlings Gold Gove for 1B in 2017 and the WHAC Gold Glove for catching in 2019.

In 2019, Coach McClain started his professional career playing 1B and catcher with the Milwaukee Milkman. Sadly, after having hip surgery McClain resigned from the Milwaukee Milkman.
